the profile of the cyberbully
According to miss Drossou, an expert psycologist specialised on teenagers, this is the profile of the intimidator:
"There are two categories of bullies:
1) Popular children-bullies.
They have the false belief that in this way will remain popular and further hurting others makes them feel that they have the upper hand.
2) Children not very social.
They have very low self-esteem and sometimes feel bad with themselves, so they aim to make their victims feel what they feel themselves. They think that they can be integrated easily in a group of peers, if they talk about their "achievement". They are not capable of feeling empathy, so they cannot step into the shoes of the child who was hurt and ashamed through the net.
Abusers have usually uninterested or authoritarian parents. They are children with no particular enthusiasm for school, dependent on the internet. They show symptoms of anxiety or depression. They often find difficulty in controling their emotions and impulses. In addition to that, anonymity allows abusers to avoid direct face-contact with the victim, which means that less courage is needed when harassed online. Moreover cyberbullies tend to be ignorant of the consequences of their actions and they have great difficulty in handling pressure from their peers. They might be jealous of the child target (jealousy on the external appearance, academic performance, athletic performance, achievements or popularity victim)."
So why do we (cyber)bully? As far as the 1st category of bullies is concerned its much more than popularity or fame that leads these children in cyberbullying. Because not every popular child is a cyberbully. These children that become bullies are mentally distorted and they have so much passion for popularity and for acceptance that they are blinded by it. They always want to be the centre of attention and they find that by teasing and bullying an easy target, the victim of cyberbullying. The 2nd type on the other hand, is not so social. However he also has many problems and hasn't accepted himself.
Its a common phenomenon that "the victim becomes the victimizer",so it's worthy thinking about how the victim might transform into a bully.
